ONLINE VISIT WITH THE TURTLES AT THE ECHO MUSEUM

The Voyagers in 4th, 5th, & 6th grades, and Discovery students in 6th grade, held a google meet conference with a staff member of the Echo museum. During this visit students learned about one endangered species of spiny soft-shelled turtles that live and breed only in the northern part of Lake Champlain. It is estimated that just 300 exist there in their wild habitat.

The two classrooms of students  were online with the Echo instructor at the same time and students from both groups got to ask questions they had about the turtles. What do they eat? What is their habitat like?, What are the animals and human behaviors that threaten the turtles? How long can they stay underwater? How many eggs do they lay and at what stages of their life cycle? How long do they live?  The staff member prefaced all these wonderful questions with a viewing of a turtle aquarium and a chance to see an adult soft shelled turtle being transported by hand by another staff member. The half hour session proved to be interesting and information packed. Only a few questions remained unanswered but the Echo staff member was able to direct students where to go online to learn what they wished to know.
